Angela Kane was appointed as the Sam Nunn Distinguished Fellow at the Nuclear Threat Initiative in Washington, D.C. in August 2021.  She is a Visiting Professor and Member of the Strategic Committee, Paris School of International Affairs/SciencesPo; Visiting Professor, Tsinghua University Schwarzman Scholars, Beijing; Professorial Lecturer, Diplomatic Academy Vienna and serves as Chair of the United Nations University Council in Japan. She holds a number of other functions – temporarily paused - such as Vice President, International Institute for Peace, Vienna; and Senior Fellow at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation.

 

Together with Professor Moon Chung-in she was the Co-Chair of the Global Future Council on the Korean Peninsula of the World Economic Forum until November 2021. She is a Member, Group of Eminent Persons, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization; Member, Group of Eminent Persons for Substantive Advancement for Nuclear Disarmament appointed by the Foreign Minister of Japan; Member, European Leadership Network; Reserve Member, High-Level Group on Artificial Intelligence of the European AI Alliance; Member, United Europe; Member, Global Alliance of Leaders, Astana Club; additional Board memberships in NGOs in Europe, United States, and Asia. 

Until mid-2015, Ms. Kane served as the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs. She provided strategy, vision and thought leadership for the United Nations on its multilateral disarmament and non-proliferation agendas. She was responsible for planning, negotiating and conducting the ground-breaking investigation of alleged chemical weapons use in Syria in 2013, which resulted in Syria’s destruction of its chemical stocks. Previously, Ms. Kane served as the Under-Secretary-General for Management, heading the largest and most complex UN department, with responsibility for the global financial and budgetary management of the UN (2008-2012). Ms. Kane also served as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, focusing on the prevention and resolution of conflicts in all regions except Africa. She was the Assistant Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management. Her field experience includes Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), a special assignment to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and multi-year postings in Indonesia and Thailand.
