Abstract
Toward an increase of the military's indiscriminate
bloodshed, suppression against civilians since the coup on February 1st,
the international community made a lot of statements of condemnation, yet did
not take much action. This paper points out the limitations of U.S., China,
United Nations’ intervention in Myanmar and emphasizes that ASEAN
must make active diplomatic efforts based on ASEAN centrality and the
principles of democracy specified in the ASEAN Charter to develop a solution to the situation in Myanmar. South Korea should also seek
specific support measures to resolve the Myanmar situation as a testbed for
implementing value-oriented diplomacy such as human rights and peace in the New
South.
