Energy Policy Issues of Yoon Seok-yeol Administration

English Abstract

The energy policy issues are presented that need to be properly addressed in order for the new government to promote effectively nuclear energy and renewable energy together under the basic principle of harmonizing both. Three major current issues for restoring the nuclear energy sector are introduced first including the speedy resumption of the construction of Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4, which are the prerequisites for the further growth of the nuclear sector. Enhancing nuclear power plant exports and developing new nuclear technologies such as SMRs are then discussed. Regarding the boost of new and renewable energy, the policies needed to expand renewables in the ways to fit the Korea’s environmental conditions are proposed along with the policies to support the development of new energy technologies such as next-generation solar cells and various energy storage systems.
