Japan is our close neighbor with some dregs of old grudge. Through the 2009 election for the House of Representatives, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) took over the power. The major political platform of this newborn DPJ administration is to pursue diplomatic equal standing with the US and Asia preponderance policy showing a variation from the political penchant of the Liberal Democratic Party. The DPJ's plan to relocate the Fudenma US Air Force Base was a hot potato in the US-Japan relations and its backdown from this plan made Prime Minister Hatoyama step down relinquishing his post to Kan Naoto. Thus the abrasive relationship between the two countries was basically relieved but there are still some aftereffects. Nonetheless, the DPJ administration is likely to continue the Asia preponderance policy or environmental policy to interrelate with the economic revitalization plan. The Asia preponderance policy has a positive factor in the Korea-Japan relations because it calls for realizing suffrage of foreigners. It also portends a change in Japan's relations with China. We must conduct a more thorough review and analysis of new political propensity of the DPJ administration to evaluate its potential in this fast changing post-Cold War international situation, especially how Japan would interact with rising China. Understanding Japan's new policy is beneficial for Korea to establish suitable and flexible foreign and security policies. For that reason, this study is to review the political propensity of DPJ key players and how they would orchestrate the US-Japan relations, Asia policy, and environmental policy.
