Some in our society believe that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's death will result in sudden anarchy; this belief is derived from a narrow minded view of identifying the North Korean Political Regime with Kim Jong-il as one entity. It would be rash to say the North Korean regime would collapse upon the death of their supreme leader, without taking into account the prominent role played by the authority of the party, oppressive role of the army and influence of various security agencies. The author of this book focuses on the status and role of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee, WPK Central Military Commission, and National Defence Commission to illustrate that, in the event of Kim Jong-il's death, these agencies have the capacity to stabilize the political situation and lead the country.
With such perception in mind, the book analyzes North Korea's political history, governing ideology, power system, and power elites. Part one analyzes the problems associated with 'South Korean superiority and Universalism', 'Law and State Centered Approach' that exist in North Korean politics research. Part two illustrates the period from 1945 to 1994 in North Korean political history that showed growth of the WPK and state organization, establishment of the power system based around Kim Il-sung, and the creation of a succession plan for Kim Jong-il. Part three explains Kim Jong-il's official power succession process following Kim Il-sung's death, personnel changes in the power elite, official process of Kim Jong-un's power succession. Part four analyzes the relationship between North Korean government's sense of crisis and Juche idea, Military First Policy, and survival strategy. Part five looks into the central role played by WPK in the Socialist state and the importance of North Korea's five dominant power apparatus. Part six examines the revised details of the 2010 Party Constitution amendment, status and authority of the WPK Central Committee, past and present role of WPK Central Committee members and alternate members. Part seven analyzes the status and elites of the Political Bureau and Secretariat of the WPK Central Committee, while also examining the organizational structure and functions of the departments. Part eight inspects the status of state apparatus and constitution of the North, status and authority of the National Defence Commission, the role of the Supreme People's Assembly. Part nine analyzes the military role of the WPK Central Military Commission and the National Defence Commission. Part ten inspects the role of labor organizations and how they utilize the League of Socialist Youth in an effort to control the North Korean people.
