In the rapidly changing international environment which has emerged in the post-Cold War era at the dawn of the 21st century, significant changes have been wrought to the Northeast Asian order. The changes in the Northeast Asian order have been caused by: the US government's war on terror and the related changes in the East Asian policy: Japan's remilitarization; the emergence of China; and Russia's rapid decline. Moreover, in terms of economic dynamics, this era has been the growth of organizations such as APEC, ASEM and increased cooperation between Korea, China, and Japan. This study focused on changes in the Northeast Asian order by analyzing relations between the US, China, and Japan in terms of their respective power structures and their institutional functions. The researchers analyzed the trilateral diplomacy between the US China, and Japan, the balance of power between them, their respective nations of military security, and the growing diversification of their political economies in order to identify the prospects for change in the Northeast Asian order. In Chapter 1 entitled The American Government's Policy towards Japan and China, and the Northeast Asian Order, Sang Hyun Lee analyzed the Bush administration's policy towards China and Japan, as well as the trilateral relations between the three powers and the Northeast Asian order. In Chapter 2 entitled The Most Important Yet Strained Trilateral Relationship: China's Perception of US-China-Japan Relations, Jae Chul Kim delved into the following issues: the US-China-Japan trilateral relationship; the Taiwan problem and the trilateral relationship; and Japan's efforts to strengthen this trilateral relationship in order to secure a better balance of power.
