The international security environment and the world order have undergone remarkable changes in the aftermath of the events of 9/11. Furthermore, the war on terror carried out by the world's sole superpower, the US, has deeply affected the international security environment. These changes in the international security environment have affected changes in the security policies of the four major surrounding the Korean peninsula, whose own changes have in turn had an impact on South Korea. This study attempted to analyze South Korea's security environment and to contribute to Korea's formulation of more reasonable security policies. Two main issues were focused on in this study: identifying the changes that the four major powers surrounding the Korean peninsula and North Korea have made to their security policies; and Korea's desirable response to these changes. In the Introduction, Dr. Song presented a short summary of the four major powers and North Korea's security policies. Sang Hyun Lee wrote chapter 2 entitled Security Policy of the US, and Tai-Hwan Lee wrote Chapter 3 entitled China's Security Policy. Ho-Seop Kim of Chungang University wrote Chapter 4 entitled Japan's Security Policy and Hyun Ik Hong wrote Chapter 5 entitled Russia's Security Policy. At last, Dae-Sung Song wrote Chapter 6 entitled North Korea's Security Policy.
