This book, which attempts to analyze the Kim Jong Il's regime's survival strategy, aims to help Korean government's formulation of its long-term policy towards the North. In Chapter 1 entitled North Korea's Domestic Strategy, Seong-Chang Cheong argues that the Kim Jong Il's regime survival strategy is based on the domestic and international strategies, which were advocated under Kim Il Sung. As such, rather than doing away with the 'Juche' ruling ideology in order to address the changing situation, the Kim Jong Il regime has adopted a dual stance of continuing to pat lip serve to this ideology while bringing about changes in certain fields. The continuation of this ruling ideology is designed to ensure the continued unity of the nation, while these partial changes are designed to adjust the system to these new realities. In Chapter 2 entitled North Korea's Foreign and South Korea Policy, Haksoon Paik argues that while the objectives of the North in the past were to prevail in the competition between the two systems and unite the peninsula by force, they now pursue a policy of peaceful coexistence with the South in order to assure the survival of the North Korean system and of the Kim Jong Il regime itself. In this regard, there is a need for the South Korean government to encourage the North's further pursuit of peaceful coexistence. Moreover, South Korea should attempt to further balance its relations with the US and the North in order to play an active role in bringing about a resolution to the North Korean nuclear crisis that is more advantageous to Korea's national interests.
