This book has two objectives: (1) to analyze what democracy is, what democracy means in Korea,
and how democracy is operating in Korea, and (2) based on the first objective, to develop tasks
required by the Korean democracy for its sustainable development.
The book complies four parts, and each part carries two to four chapters.? The first part analyzes
the process through which Korea's authoritarian regime had transformed to a democracy; the second
part theorizes democracy and its consolidation, and analyzes, in accordance with the theory, how
the Korean democracy has been consolidating; the third part depicts why and how the Korean democracy
was challenged, especially by the economic crisis of 1997; and finally the forth part analyzes how
the economic crisis and the concurrent political crisis of the relatively nascent democracy was overcome.
In the concluding part, analyses and arguments of the four parts converge to develop several tasks
which Koreans are to implement.? The tasks can be summarized that Koreans should stabilize the current
socio-political regime through fair competitions and interactions by respecting the currently operating
rules of games, which are comparatively fair, rather than changing rules of games under the name of reforms.
