Global Governance is a comprehensive paradigm for viewing the transformation of world order in this age of globalization.



With increasing global interdependence, at present, humanity is faced with challenges that are hard to comprehend under the traditional national security model, including racial and religious conflict, the potential for proliferation of weapon of mass destruction (WMD), and terrorism. Therefore, questions have been raised with regards to the traditional view of security through the balance of powers and suggestions to employ global governance to understand international security. However, there is a viewpoint that suggests dispelling global and regional hegemonic rivalry between great powers is difficult; furthermore pessimism exists with concerns raising the question on if unique regional problems can be dealt with as a global issue. There are some pessimists who doubt the global governance paradigm entirely. Despite the pessimism, there are arguments that suggest that in a period of transition in the international security environment, middle powers such as South Korea's decision to seek solidarity will promote global peace and prosperity. 



This book was published with the context of such problems in mind. The first part of the book, which provides the introduction discusses the following information in the first chapter. 1) Global governance: definition and background information, 2) Research trend of the international political studies academia, 3) The major issues of global governance, 4) The diversification and multipolarization of global players, 5) The future of global governance. The second part of the book positions the UN as an integral player in global governance and assesses the UN's role and task as the leading global player. The second chapter to fifth chapter focuses on international security and discusses the issues and players of global governance. In other words, the present condition and challenges of global "dispute" governance, global "terrorism" governance, global "nuclear weapons" governance, and "great power dynamics and regional security" governance.



Will the world's sole superpower the US retain its position with both wealth and power; will global players experience multipolarization and diversification, resulting in adjustment of the current system; or will China, Brazil, India, and other emerging nations surpass the US at some point in the future? Such questions are always on the mind of scholars and policy makers who study today's international relations. This book focuses on global governance as a means to enhance public good. I hope that this book will allow domestic scholars and policy makers to see past inter-Korean and Northeast Asia's issues and view the diplomacy%uB7security environment in a global sense. Explanation through a theoretical perspective would entail the utilization of institutionalism as a foundation with focus on revealing the realistic factors.
