Since the 1990s, many changes have occurred in the international order. The system of alliances in the Western world began to undergo monumental changes since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Among the changes, economic rivalries between the major economic powers in particular are noticeable where regionalism is an emerging paradigm. Which would be the constellation of the forth-coming international politics? This book intends to search for the answer to this question by comparing two regional entities that operate in East Asia : APEC and ASEM. As such, this book looks at APEC and ASEM from the standpoint of political economy. Seong Chul Kim from the Sejong Institute wrote about APEC in chapter two, dealing with the establishment, background and accomplishments of the organization. Chapter three, written by Sang Hyeop Shin of the Graduate School of Pan-Pacific International Studies in Kyunghee University, takes a look at ASEM in a similar context. Chapter four, written by In Kyo Chung from the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, compares APEC and ASEM on the basis of economic analysis. In his chapter Chung argues that the scope of cooperation within the ASEM TFAP is smaller that the APEC TILF and that the level of implementation of the former is less that the latter. Chapter five, written by Kisoo Kim, consists of a strategic comparison of the twp importance of strategic calculations of the major participants of both entities. In addition, he noted that development of the regional entities is influenced by each other.
