A view of the US-Korea alliance strictly from a military standpoint is one that is limited in nature. Although Korea-US relations have their origins in military ties, the relationship has expanded into the political, economic, and socio-cultural spheres. The two nations' belief in democracy and in a market economy system is a living proof of the mutual values that both sides share. As contacts between the two Koreas have expanded in this post-Cold War era and efforts have been made to remove the Cold War structure existing on the Korean peninsula, the non-military aspects of the Korea-US relationship have come to be regarded as increasingly important. In order to develop this alliance in a more desirable direction, a comprehensive reevaluation of the overall Korea-US relations, both at the military and non-military level, must be carried out. By reviewing the papers published by the Sejong Institute from the 1990s to 2002 about Korea-US relations, this study attempted to analyze the present state of this alliance, which is now in its 50th year in 2003, and to introduce future measures to invigorate Korea-US relations. In Chapter 1, papers written on the topic of the general perceptions of the Korea-US alliance were analyzed in order to develop a better understanding of how the alliance is viewed. In Chapter 2, the present role US forces in Korea was analyzed. In Chapter 3, the implications of South Korea's independent defense posture for the US forced stationed in Korea were analyzed. In Chapter 4, an analysis of the papers written on the topic of multilateral security cooperation in Northeast Asia, which is widely regarded as the most desirable outcome, and on the Korea-US alliance after unification was carried out. In the final Chapter, the trade and commercial relations of these two countries were analyzed in order to develop a better understanding of their overall economic relations.
