Syrian Civil War: US-Russia Military Intervention and Conflict
The year 2019 is coming to an end. under President Trump’s “America First” slogan, the US is withdrawing from major multilateral international agreements including climate change and Iranian nuclear issues. Though it might be a temporary situation, it makes us think whether the US-led liberal international order will turn into a realist competition among major powers. This book, <Syrian Civil War: US-Russia Military Intervention and Conflict> mainly focuses on conflict and cooperation between two parties: US with President Trump’s outbound offshore strategy, and Russia with President Putin’s inbound strategy.

The Social Basis of Perception on Reunification
In Korea, the issues of reunification and North Korea are areas in which differences of opinion is the biggest depending on ones’ political position. Ever since the breakout of Korean War, liberals and conservatives have been competing against each other regarding various North Korean issues. In a democratic system, political elites’ ultimate target cannot succeed once they deviate from the preference of their supporters. Thus, the elites try their best to ‘advertise’ the legitimacy of their policies and to widen people’s support.

On November 28, 2019, a press conference for the newly published book, Demystifying the North Korea, written by Dr. Jong-seok Lee (former Minister of Unification, ROK) and Dr. Choi Eun-joo, was held at Artee Hall, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.

On December 6, 2019, the Sejong Institute held the “6th Thesis Competition on Korea-Japan-China Trilateral Cooperation” at International Conference Room of the Institute. This year, a total of 29 theses were submitted, and 12 finalists presented their cases at the event. As a result, 6 teams (1 grand prize, 2 excellence award, 3 encouragement award) were awarded.

Closing ceremony of the 25th Sejong National Strategy Training Program was held on December 11, 2019. A total of 88 trainees received completion certificates in attendance by the Sejong Institute’s chairman, president and alumni association, and prizes were awarded to outstanding trainees.

On December 18, 2019, the Sejong Institute held a commencement ceremony of the 2019 ASEAN Young Leaders Program. A total of 16 participants received a certificate of completion. On November 20, “Korea Global Forum for Peace (KGFP) 2019” was held at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, DC, under the title of “Envisioning a Peace Regime Process for the Korean Peninsula.” The Forum was hosted by the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs and jointly organized by the Sejong Institute and the USIP

Korea Global Forum for Peace (KGFP) 2019 in Singapore
On December 9, “Korea Global Forum for Peace (KGFP) 2019” was held at S. Rajarantam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore, under the title of “Denuclearization and Peace on the Korean Peninsula and the ROK-Singapore Cooperation.” The Forum was hosted by the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs and jointly organized by the Sejong Institute and the RSIS.

On December 12, 2019, the Sejong Institute held the Tenth Sejong Policy Forum of 2019 on the topic of “South Korea’s Public Policy for Peace on the Korean Peninsula: Evaluation and Tasks” at the Somerset Palace located in Gwanghwamun, Seoul.

On December 2 2019, the Sejong Institute held the twenty-second colloquium of this year. Dr. Hong Hyun-ik, Director of the Department of Diplomatic Strategy Studies, presented his paper on the topic of “Prospects of US-DPRK Relations and South Korea’s Strategy.”

On December 6, 2019, the Sejong Institute held the twenty-third colloquium of this year. Dr. Lee Dae Woo, Director of the Department of Security Strategy Studies, presented his paper on the topic of “Political Situation in the Middle East and Changes in the U.S. Alliance Policy.”

The 2nd Sejong-Naumann Foundation Roundtable
On November 28, 2019, the Sejong Institute held another roundtable with Friedrich Naumann Foundation at the Institute’s conference room. Dr. Henrik Bispinck of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Institut für Geschichtswissenschaften visited the institute and gave a presentation on the topic of “The State of German Unification 30 Years – after the Fall of the Wall: Historical Background and Current Problems.”
