At the Sejong Institute's 6th Colloquium of March 12th, 2024, Hyuik Hong, Senior Research Fellow of the Sejong Institute, presented "North Korea's Nuclear Threat and South Korea's Security and Diplomatic Strategy".

The discussion was moderated by Sungwon Lee, Director of the Center for Center of Security Strategy of the Sejong Institute.

He presented that the current situation is that South Korea has won the economic and social system competition between the two Koreas, but been threatened by North Korea in terms of national security. Although South Korea has an economy far greater than North Korea and possesses superior conventional military capabilities, North Korea has developed and secured missiles and other delivery vehicles along with nuclear weapons, demonstrating its willingness to attack the South and conduct mass destruction.

While the North Korean regime argue there are no intention of deliberately starting a war, it is possible that a hostile confrontation between North and South Korea could lead to an accidental armed conflict at any time.

In this context, Dr. Hong identified the current status of Korean security and proposes a security and diplomatic strategy to check and improve deterrence readiness in the event of a North Korea's nuclear attack, and to resume the North Korean nuclear negotiations and reach an agreement.​
