At the Sejong Institute's 7th Colloquium of April 9th, 2024, Myonwoo Lee, Vice President of the Sejong Institute, presented "North Korea-Japan Relation and Aspects".

There has been a new movement in the relations between Japan and North Korea, which have been estranged for some time, and it is believed to be related to Prime Minister Kishida's remedial speech in the Congress on January 30th regarding the abducted Japanese citizens to North Korea.

There are four main variables that play a role in Japan's foreign relations or bilateral relations between Japan and other countries: international environmental variables, regional environmental variables, bilateral variables, and domestic variables, and since the collapse of the Cold War, there have been more active government-to-government negotiations between Japan and North Korea than before.
