At the Sejong Institute's 8th Colloquium of April 30th, 2024, Jungkun Seo, a Visiting Research Fellow at Sejong Institute, presented "2024 US Presidential Election's Issues and Outlook: Polarized Politics and Structural Change in the US Presidential Election".
During the 2008 U.S. presidential election in which candidate Obama, promised change and reform won the election by gathering the "Obama Coalition", it is important to examine the impact of polarization on presidential elections since then.
He noted that the current U.S. political context, in which polarized politics overlaps with racial conflicts, educational differences, and foreign affairs issues, has been the background for the continuation of Trumpism for the past decade since 2015, but that this polarized situation has given President Biden a chance for re-election.
As a result, he added, President Biden can define this election as an anti-Trump election rather than an evaluation of the his past four years.
