The Sejong Institute held its 9th Colloquium on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 on the subject of “Economic Sanctions from International Society amid North Korea’s 4th Nuclear Test.” Vice President Un-Chul Yang at the institute presented on the theoretical and practical backgrounds of economic sanctions, the recent North Korea sanctions legislation passed in the U.S., the prospects of the new UN Security Council sanctions resolution, as well as the necessity and policy implications of economic sanctions on North Korea from a diverse perspective. The participants including Chairman Joon-woo Park, President Chang Soo Jin as well as all other senior and visiting research fellows at the institute engaged in an active discussion on the efficacy and necessity of different types of sanctions on North Korea. The discussion focused on the new unilateral and multilateral sanctions being rolled out by various counties as well as the UN Security Council framework in the aftermath of North Korea’s 4th nuclear testing.
