On June 27th Tuesday, at the Sejong Institute's 12th Colloquium of 2023, Eunjoo Choi, a Research Fellow, presented the theme of "Evaluation and Prospect of the 8th Plenary Session of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea"

The Colloquium started with the confirmation of North Korea's purpose to evaluate and discuss their major policies in the first half of 2023.

The report on the 8th plenary session of the Party Central Committee increased the content of the economic sector compared to the report on the 6th plenary session of the Party Central Committee announced in January 2023, while the content of the military, foreign, and South Korean sectors has been decreased.

Due to North Korea's poor economic performance, personnel changes were made, and tangible results were confirmed in the construction sector, but still poses many tasks. Hence suggesting that military and diplomatic responses were combined to strengthening defensive measures.

Attention on whether diplomacy will resume in a situation where summit diplomacy and high-level exchanges have been halted due to Covid-19 since 2020.

This debate on the situation was hosted by Seong-chang Cheong, Director of the Department of Unification Strategy Studies.
