On Tuesday, July 18, 2016, the Sejong Institute invited Chang-wee Lee, Professor at the University of Seoul, and held the 20th Colloquium of the year on the subject of “The South China Sea Disputes and the South Korean Response Strategy.” Sang-hyun Lee, Vice President of the Research Planning Division, moderated the Colloquium, and the discussants included Hyun-jung Kim, Professor at Yonsei University, and Sang-min Shim, Professor at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy. Discussions at the Colloquium involved the background and history of the disputes in the South China Sea, the significance of the Award of the South China Sea Arbitration on July 12, 2016, China’s stance on the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the aforementioned waters, and the response strategy for Korea. Professor Lee suggested that we must consider the effects of the tribunal’s ruling on the waters near Dokdo and Ieodo while interpreting the ruling’s implications.
