At the Sejong Institute's 5th Colloquium of March 5th, 2024, Jungsup Kim, Vice President of the Sejong Institute, presented "Examining U.S.-China Strategies and Issues Related to the Taiwan Conflict".

The discussion was moderated by Seong Chang Cheong, Director of the Center for Korean Peninsula Strategy of the Sejong Institute.

Deterrence is at the core of the U.S. military strategy on Taiwan, and the idea is to modernize U.S. military capabilities and build a robust anti-China coalition by drawing in allies to deter China. China, on the other hand, focuses on coercion rather than invasion, and the use of force is likely to be resorted to only when all other options have been exhausted.

Therefore, by examining the Taiwan Strait issue, which goes hand-in-hand with the Korean Peninsula, it will be useful to analyze U.S. and Chinese strategies, examine related issues, and evaluate South Korea's approach to the Taiwan Strait issue in peacetime and its options in the event of an emergency.
