The 2023 Forum on US-ROK-Japan Nuclear Strategy

On November 30, the Sejong Institute held the 2023 Korea-U.S.-Japan Nuclear Strategy Forum under the theme of "Changes in the Northeast Asian Security Environment and Directions for the US-ROK-Japan Strategic Cooperation."  

 

The forum was held in three sessions, starting with the opening speech from Seong Chang Chung, Director of the Center for East Asia Cooperation at the Sejong Institute, gratitude remarks from Yong-joon Lee, Chairman of the Sejong Institute, and a congratulatory speech by former Minister of Foreign Affairs Myung-hwan Yu. 

 

The first Session was held under the theme of "Strengthening military power in North Korea, Russia, and China, and prospects for changes in security in Northeast Asia." Daryl. G. Press, Professor at Dartmouth University, Narushige Michishita, Vice President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, and Seong Chang Chung, Director of the Center for East Asia Cooperation at the Sejong Institute made a presentation. Followed by discussions between Minhyun Kim, Professor at Kyunghee University, Myonwoo Lee, Vice President of Sejong Institute, and Robert Kelly from Pusan University. The presentation and discussion were moderated by Professor Changwhi Lee from the University of Seoul.

 

In the Second Session, the theme was to discuss "China's invasion of Taiwan and preparation for a possible nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula." The presentation was presented by David Sacks, a researcher at the Council on Foreign Relations, Ohara Bonji from the Sasakawa Foundation, and Professor Jiyong Kim from the Naval Academy. For discussion, Biyeon Jo from the Korea Institute of Defense Academy, Byungkwang Park from the Institue for National Security Strategy, and Kwang-jin Kim, Professor at Sookmyung Woman's University made discussions about the topic. The presentation and Discussion were moderated by Jaesung Jeon, Professor at Seoul National University.

 

The third session was under the theme of "The direction of trilateral cooperation between Korea, the U.S., and Japan in Northeast Asia." The presentation was made by Lami Kim, from Daniel K. Inoue Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, Koda Yoji, Former Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force(JMSDF) Commander, Yongjoon Kim, Professor at Korea National Defense University, followed by Geunsik Kim, Professor at Hanyang University, In-bum Chun, former Army Special Warfare Commander, and Jinho Jun, Professor at Kwangwoon University. The third session was moderated by Junkyu Lee, President of India Forum and former Ambassador to Japan and India.​
