At the Sejong Institute's 3rd Colloquium of February 19, 2024, Miae Jung, a Visiting Research Fellow at the Sejong Institute, presented "Japan's Response to its population crisis and implications".

The discussion was moderated by Seong Chang Cheong, Director of the Center for Korean Peninsula Strategy of the Sejong Institute.

As population issues such as declining fertility rates and an aging population have emerged as the biggest challenges in South Korea, and the crisis of "Korea's disappearance" due to the rapid decline of population is rising, both the ruling and opposition parties have made birth control measures a top priority Campaign promises to the April 10 general election.

As Korea is aging at an unprecedentedly fast pace compared to its neighboring countries, this colloquium looked at the case of Japan, a country that experienced a declining birthrate and aging population before Korea, and explored the implications for Korea.
