On Friday, September 8, the Sejong Institute and Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS) jointly held the 2017 Shanghai Conference with the sponsorship of ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Intended to establish a bilateral network for Northeast Asian multilateral cooperation, the conference was a venue for the international relations experts from Korea and China to discuss “the Inauguration of the New South Korean Administration and ROK-China Relations.” 

On the topic of “the New South Korean Administration and ROK-China Relations,” Cha Chang-hoon (Pusan National University), Chung Jaehung (the Sejong Institute), Wang Weimin (Shanghai University of Political Science and Law), and Gong Keyu (SIIS) each presented different themes such as the recent shifting political landscape on the Korean Peninsula, the foreign policy challenges of the Moon Jae-in administration and ROK-China relations at the first session. In session II South Korea’s and China’s Role in the Northeast Asian Multilateral Cooperation,” the participants discussed the previous South Korean administration’s multilateral cooperation diplomacy in Northeast Asia and the multilateral security environment in Northeast Asia faced with the North Korean nuclear and missile development, with presentations from Park Sang Hyun (Korea Institute for Defense Analyses), Koh You-hwan (Dongguk University), Zheng Jiyong (Fudan University), and Shao Yu-qun (SIIS).
