Sejong-Washington Thinktank Discussion

The Sejong Institute held a meeting with major think tanks in DC as an extension of the Korea-U.S. Seoul-Washington Forum hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations(CFR) in Washington in 2023. 

 

On October 24, a private meeting with the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) was held. The NBR is a think tank headquartered in Seattle and operating a branch in Washington DC, primarily studying diplomatic security and economic issues related to Asia. The meeting was attended by experts, especially those who are mainly outreach-related to Congress in the NBR. On the NBR side, several experts attended, including Alison Szalwinski (Vice President of Research), Joshua Nezam(Director of Congressional Affairs) Jeremy Rausch(Project Manager), and Miles Monaco(Project Manager). 

 

On October 26, the delegation visited the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) and Atlantic Council to hold a closed-door meeting. The USIP meeting was held under the theme of "Measures to Mitigate Tensions and Manage Crisis on the Korean Peninsula," and the Atlantic Council held "Measures to Cooperate South Korea, the U.S., and Japan for Nuclear deterrence in North Korea." The USIP meeting was attended by experts on the Korean Peninsula, including Frank Aum along with Syd Seiler(former Special Representative for North Korea Policy), Andrew Scobell(Distinguished Fellow), Clint Work(KEI Researcher), Christopher Green(International Crisis Group), Mirna Galic(USIP), Kemi Adewalure(USIP), and Jennifer Staats(USIP).

 

The Atlantic Council meeting in the afternoon, was presided over by Markus Garlauskas(Director of the Center for Indo-Pacific Security) with Frank Kramer(Former deputy defense secretary), Andrew Brown(Researcher), Lauren Gilbert(Researcher), Jessica Taylor(Major), Moses Woo(United Nations Command Liaisons officer), Phillip Yu(U.S. Navy RADM), and Katherine Yusko(Researcher) and discussed mainly the ways to strengthen extended deterrence between South Korea, the U.S., ​
