The 16th Korea-U.S. West Coast Strategic Forum was held on
Tuesday, June 29, 2016, at Stanford University, starting with welcoming remarks
by Gi-Wook Shin, Director of APARC of Stanford University, and Joon-woo Park,
Chairman of the Sejong Institute. Participating experts from Korea and the U.S.,
including William Perry, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, and Minsoon Song,
former Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, engaged in in-depth
discussions over the situations in Northeast Asian region, North Korea, and
ROK-U.S. alliance.
In Session I, ‘Northeast Asia Regional Dynamics,’ Heung-Kyu Kim,
Professor of Political Science at Ajou University, and Thomas Fingar,
Distinguished Fellow at Stanford University, presented on the topics of “Shifting
the Paradigm: China’s North Korea Policy during the
period of the U.S.-China Strategic Rivalry” and “Regional Developments,” respectively. Haksoon Paik, Vice President
of Education and Training Division at the Sejong Institute, and Daniel C.
Sneider, Associate Director for Research at APARC, presented on North Korea in
Session II, followed by presentations on ROK-US alliance by Sung-Han Kim,
Professor at Korea University, and Kathleen Stephens, Distinguished Fellow at
APARC, in Session III.
