On May 15, 2014, the Sejong Institute invited Dr. Terence Roehrig, Professor at the U.S. Naval War College and Director of the Asia-Pacific Studies Group, and held the 3rd policy symposium under the title of “The US and ROK Response Measures for the North Korean Nuclear Program.”
The symposium was moderated by senior researcher Eunsook Chung, and the researchers at the Sejong Institute, including President Song and Vice President Lee, participated in discussion following Dr. Roehrig’s presentation.
Dr. Roehrig noted North Korea’s possible continuation of nuclear development and potentials and emphasized the importance of ROK’s non-nuclear stopping power and the extended deterrence of the United States. In the following Q&A session, many argued that the U.S. should take a more leading role in denuclearizing North Korea and exchanged views on the current national insecurity, decrease in the US national defense budget, possibilities and problems of the ROK-US MD system, necessity for more stringent sanctions on North Korea and etc.
