On February 11, the Sejong Institute held the 1st Policy  Symposium with Fraser Ronald, analyst at Canada's Department of National Defence, on the subject of “the current Northeast Asia.” 
The discussion was participated by the Vice President and senior researchers of the Sejong Institute. The participants freely discussed about current issues in Northeast Asia. They also shared their different views on the purge of Jang Song-taek. Some argued that it indicates more enhanced power of the regime, but others said it shows the current unstable condition of the regime. However, the participants all agreed that North Korea’s consistent threats and provocations are aimed at the stabilization of the regime. They also pointed out the importance of China’s role in the North Korean matter.    
In regard to issues such as the rise of China and the US-Japan Relations, Mr. Ronald noted that although the rise of China has become tangible, there are some overestimated aspects as China still needs more time to establish an operation system like that of the U.S.. Ronald said it won’t be easy to deny Japan’s right to collective self-defense, but he pointed out that Japan needs to put efforts to receive credits in the region, like Germany did in Europe. He also commented that Canada has adopted a particular strategy, which only focuses on a specific area, in terms of international contributions, due to its restricted natural resources.
