Sejong Institute’s 30th Anniversary Conference
On Friday, May 20, 2016, the Sejong Institute held an academic conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of its history at the Grand Conference Hall (1F) of the institute.
During the commencement ceremony, which began with President Chang Soo Jin’s opening statement and Chairman Joon-woo Park’s welcoming remarks, Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and Unification Minister Hong Yong-pyo gave congratulatory remarks.
Some two-hundred participants, guest speakers, panel discussants, and visitors from various government agencies, and educational and research institutions attended the conference, including Chancellor Yun Duk-min of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, President Jinwook Choi of the Korea Institute for National Unification, and President Hahm Chaibong of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Former Unification Ministers Gil Jae Ryu and In-taek Hyun also attended the conference as panel moderators.
The conference proceeded in three different sessions—(a) “The Sejong Institute’s 30 Years: The Role of Think Tank,” (b) “Assessing Current Affairs in Diplomacy, Security and Unification,” and (c) “Mid- to Long-Term Analysis for 2030.” During the conference the Sejong research fellows and other panelists held active discussions on the future direction of the Sejong Institute and its appropriate role as a leading independent policy think tank in South Korea. During the second and third sessions, the discussants also had an opportunity to discuss some of the pressing issues in foreign policy, security, and unification strategies.
