On Wednesday, June 28, the Sejong Institute and Stanford Walter H. Shorenstein Asia–Pacific Research Center (APARC) held a public symposium at Korea Press Center under the topic, “A Step Forward: The ROK-US Alliance and North Korea.” The symposium, comprised of two sessions, began with the keynote speech from Professor Lee Su-hoon of Kyungnam University, Chairman of the State Affairs Planning Advisory Committee’s subpanel on diplomacy and security under the Moon Jae-in administration. Moderated by Senior Fellow David Holloway of the Freeman Spogli Institute of International Studies at Stanford University, first session on “ROK-U.S. Relations” assembled participants including Michael Armacost (APARC Fellow, Shorenstein APARC, Stanford University; Former U.S. Ambassador to Japan and the Philippines), Kathleen Stephens (William J. Perry Distinguished Fellow, Shorenstein APARC, Stanford University; Former U.S. Ambassador to Korea), Yu Myung-hwan (Chairman, Sejong University; Former Minister of Foreign Affairs), and Lee Sang-hyun (Vice President, Research Planning Division of the Sejong Institute). The ensuing session on North Korea, President Jin Chang Soo of the Sejong Institute moderated the discussions. The participants such as Thomas Fingar (APARC Fellow, Shorenstein APARC, Stanford University; Former Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Analysis), Siegfried Hecker (Senior Fellow, Freeman Spogli Institute, Stanford University), Kim Yong-hyun (Professor, Dongguk University), and Cheong Seong-chang (Director of Department of Unification Strategy Studies, The Sejong Institute) gave a presentation on their views of North Korea.
