On February 19, 2014, the Sejong Institute held the second Policy  Symposium, with Professor Gerald Curtis from Columbia University, on the subject of the Abe Cabinet’s foreign policy and the ROK-Japan Relations. 

According to Prof. Curtis, who is an expert in Japan studies, despite concerns associated with the Abe Cabinet in its early term, it has succeeded in maintaining political power and recovering foreign investors’ trust back on the Abenomics as Abe’s rising approval rate indicates. However, on the other hand, Curtis showed skeptical views on future success of the Abe Cabinet and Abenomics, because of its lack of will for reform, lack of energy source, and decreasing population.  

In regard to the Abe Cabinet’s foreign policy, Curtis said that China and South Korea’s perception of Abe as a rightward personnel has somewhat distorted aspects, and Abe’s foreign policy is designed to prepare against new changing factors, such as the rise of China, North Korea’s threats and the US influence. Curtis further said the US suggests South Korea to distinguish territorial disputes from historical disputes for the betterment of the ROK-Japan Relations.
