On June 21, 2011, the Sejong Institute co-hosted the 2011 International Nuclear Security Seminar at the Plaza Hotel in Seoul, to discuss the “Changing International Nuclear Security Order and the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit”. The seminar was co-hosted with the Research Institute on National Security Affairs of Korea National Defense University (KNDU) and The Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control (KINAC).

The seminar began with opening remarks from Dr. Yeoul Soo Kim (KNDU) and keynote speeches from Lieutenant General Sung-ho Lee (President of KNDU), Dr. Daesung Song (President of the Sejong Institute) and Dr. Sang-ku Chang (President of KINAC). The seminar proceeded with three panels and a heated discussion. With heightened international interest and policy discussions on nuclear security, the seminar provided a timely setting for seeking feasible policy alternatives.

The first session was presided over by Dr. Yeoul Soo Kim (KNDU) and discussed the . The first presentation was given by Secretary of Defense Representative to the New START Negotiations Dr. Edward Warner on “Moving Toward a World Without Nuclear Weapons: A US Perspective on Next Steps”. Dr. Alexander G Savelyev of Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Russia, followed up with the second presentation on “After New START: What’s Next?” and the third presentation was given by Dr. Sungpyo Hong (KNDU) on “Threat of Nuclear Terrorism and International Nuclear Security Cooperation”. 

The second session was presided over by Dr. Tae Woo Kim of the Korean Institute for Defense Analyses and discussed the . Dr. Bruce Bennett (RAND) presented on “The Challenge of Nuclear Non-Proliferation: The North Korean Case”, Dr. Sukeyuki Ichimasa (NIDS, Japan) presented on “Prevention of Nuclear Proliferation and ‘New Nuclear Danger’”, and Dr. Hosik Yoo (KINAC) presented on “Strengthening of International Regime of Nuclear Security and its implementation in the ROK”.
