Date: 2010-04-02
On April 2, 2010, the Sejong Institute had a roundtable discussion in the small conference room with a 6-man Finnish parliamentary delegation led by Speaker Niinisto (former Minister of Justice, finance) on current issues, particularly South Korea's foreign policy and security situation and North Korean problems. Many Sejong research fellows including Sejong President Dr. Dae-sung Song and Vice President Dr. Dae-woo Lee participated in this meeting. Dr. Eun-sook Chung presided over the meeting and Dr. Chul-ho Chong and Dr. Hak-soon Paik spoke on South Korean and North Korean political policies and current situations respectively. Speaker Niinisto emphasized a common ground that both Korea and Finland suffered from despotism of strong countries historically and other members of the delegation were interested in North Korean system sustainability, nuclear capability, and the extent of Chinese economic support to North Korea. At the outset of the meeting, Finnish ambassador to Korea Mr. Wuoristo who was accompanying the delegation introduced Finland's foreign and security policies including its role in the EU and NATO as a peace partner (PfP).
