SUBJECT: The 16th Korea-China Academic Conference

The 16th annual Korea-China academic conference between the Sejong Institute and the Chinese Institute of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR) was held in Beijing on November 1, 2010. This was the first meeting after the Cheonan-Ham incident and the scholars from both countries exchanged their views on the outstanding issues including the US-China relations, regional security in Northeast Asia, future of North Korea, and Korea-China relations. The participants from Sejong were President Dr. Dae-sung Song, Director of China Research Center Dr. Tae-hwan Lee, and research fellows Dr. Eunsook Chung, Dr. Miong-sei Kang, Dr. Hyun-ik Hong, and Dr. Hyun-jeong Yoo.  

In the opening remarks, CICIR Deputy Director Ji Zhiye expressed China's position in the changing Northeast Asia security situation and Korea-China relations and Dr. Song emphasized the importance of Korea-China relations in the complex interdependency.

Both Ji Zhiye and Dr. Song indicated in their closing remarks that the two sides shared the same opinions in some areas but they still have different perspectives on some issues. They will have this conference in Korea next year hosted by the Sejong Institute.

On November 2, 2010, the Sejong participants led by Dr. Song visited the Chinese Communist Party Central External Liaison Department and Military Science Academy. At the External Liaison Department roundtable discussion, the Chinese side introduced the Chinese position in the international situation and Asia-Pacific order and the Sejong side presented Korea's major interests in the changing international situation. At the Military Science Academy, both sides introduced their roles and functions and exchanged questions and answers regarding China's national defense and regional security policy in Northeast Asia.
