  Political Constraint on China’s Economic Development: Historical Analysis of Adverse Effects of the Concentration of Power on the Economy

What is the relationship between politics and economy? What kind of relationship should the two variables maintain in order to ensure sustainable prosperity? Such questions are key to understand China, which now stands as the world’s superpower due to the rapid economic development. Deng Xiaoping was the first person in China to realize how politics should function to vitalize economy and to exercise accordingly. However, he lacked in insight about to what extent the existing power should be transferred to the economic sector. The Tiananmen Square Incident clearly showed that the economic or social liberalization that threatens the rule of the Communisty Party is intolerable.

The 12th Sejong Colloquium of 2020

On August 11, 2020, the Sejong Institute held the twelfth colloquium of this year. Dr. KIM Jungsup, Senior Research Fellow, presented his paper on the topic of " The Issues and Tasks of OPCON Transfer."   

The 13th Sejong Colloquium of 2020

On August 25, 2020, the Sejong Institute held the thirteenth colloquium of this year. Dr. CHUNG Eunsook, director of the Department of Security Strategy Studies, presented her paper on the topic of “The Future of New START and the Implications of International Strategic Stability.”   


Center for East Asian Cooperation—Seminar

On August 25 (Tue.), 2020, the Center for East Asian Cooperation of the Sejong Institute held an internal seminar. Dr. PARK Da Jung, a visiting research fellow of the institute, presented her paper on the topic of “The Impact of the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Alliance (August 1945) on the U.S. Korea Policy.”   

Korea-Europe Policy Network Meeting 2020

Korea-Europe Policy Network Meeting 2020, co-hosted by the Sejong Institute and Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, was held from August 31 to September 1, 2020 at the Westin Chosun Hotel Seoul as a virtual conference.”
