  The 50th Anniversary of Global Nuclear Non-proliferation Regime: Achievements of NPT Review Conferences and Limitations | CHUNG Eunsook

This paper takes the NPT (Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) as a central piece of global nuclear non-proliferation regime and analyzes its achievements and limitations. Furthermore, this article forecasts future 50 years of this regime. As for the methodology, the author focused on the United Nation’s NPT review conference, which is in fact the only operation mechanism of the treaty. A review conference is being held every five years among the member states parties based on the article VIII, paragraph 3 of the NPT.

  Economic Development Strategy in the Kim Jong Un Era and the Roles of Munitions Industry | CHOI Eun-ju

North Korea has traditionally prioritized the development of defense industry and relative sectors. However, North Korea recently began to change its traditional development methods. The most significant difference can bee seen at the national development strategy. North Korea has put forward economic development and improvement of people’s livelihood as top priorities, and at the same time, the roles of the military and munitions industry seem to be gradually changing in the remarks of Chairman Kim Jong Un.

  The U.S.-China-Russia Trilateral Relations in the Trump Era and Foreign Strategies of the ROK | HONG Hyun-ik

The Trump administration has declared America-first policy as the basic foreign policy stance of the U.S., and has pursued Indo-Pacific strategy that keeps China and Russia in check and encloses them as a part of larger framework of its external strategy. It signifies that the U.S. chose pursuing its own national interest rather than fulfilling its responsibility to provide public goods to the international community as an exemplary superpower in leading the global order.

  A Source of Anti-Immigrant Attitude of Populism | KANG Miong Sei

Globalization reached the cliff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is hard to predict how much this pandemic will prolong, yet the impact of pandemic on globalization has been evident. Travels that cross borders stopped and the movements of goods sharply declined. Anti-globalization began a long time ago, although it did not spread as dramatically as the COVID-19 did after the outbreak.

  Recent Events

On October 23, 2020, the Sejong Institute held the Research Planning Meeting for the year 2021 at the International Conference Room. With Vice President Lee Myon Woo presiding over the Meeting, research fellows of the Sejong Institute shared the research achievements of 2020, reviewed and confirmed the research subjects for 2021, and participated in the discussion on direction for the Sejong Institute’s future development.

The 9th Sejong Policy Forum

On October 5, 2020, the Sejong Institute held the ninth Sejong Policy Forum on the topic of “Prospects of the U.S. Presidential Election (II)” at the Somerset Palace located in Gwanghwamun, Seoul.   

The 15th Sejong Colloquium of 2020

On October 6, 2020, the Sejong Institute held the fifteenth colloquium of this year. Dr. CHUNG Jae-hung, research fellow, presented his paper on the topic of “The U.S.-China Conflict on Military Security and Possible Responses of the PLA.”   


The 16th Sejong Colloquium of 2020

On October 12, 2020, the Sejong Institute held the sixteenth colloquium of this year. Dr. WOO Jung-Yeop, research fellow, presented his paper on the topic of “The Prospects of U.S. Presidential Election and Key Policies of Each Candidate.”   

Center for East Asian Cooperation—2nd Seminar

On October 12 (Mon.), 2020, the Center for East Asian Cooperation of the Sejong Institute held the 2nd internal seminar. Dr. PARK Da Jung, a visiting research fellow of the institute, presented her paper on the topic of “The Impact of the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Alliance and Mutual Assistance (February 1950) on the U.S. Korea Policy: Focusing on the U.S. Entry of the Korean War.”   


Sejong-Carnegie Seoul Washington Forum Virtual Meeting 2020

The Sejong-Carnegie Seoul Washington Forum Virtual Meeting 2020, co-hosted by the Sejong Institute and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace(CEIP) and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, was held on October 14, 2020 as a virtual seminar.   

2nd Sejong-CFR Seoul Washington Forum Virtual Meeting 2020

The 2nd Sejong-CFR Seoul Washington Forum, co-hosted by the Sejong Institute and the Council on Foreign Relations(CFR) and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, was held on October 15, 2020 as a virtual meeting.   


The 17th Sejong Colloquium of 2020

On October 20 (Tue.), 2020, the Sejong Institute held the seventeenth colloquium of this year. Dr. KANG Miong Sei, senior research fellow, presented his paper on the topic of “Perception of American Citizens on Foreign Affairs in the Trump Era—Interventionist or Isolationist?”   

The 18th Sejong Colloquium of 2020

On October 22 (Thu.), 2020, the Sejong Institute held the eighteenth colloquium of this year. Dr. CHUNG Jae-hung, research fellow, presented his paper on the topic of “Perception of the Chinese Experts on Current Regional Security Issues and Relative Responses—Focusing on Perceptions and Opinions of Experts in China.”
