Dr.
Yoon Jung CHOI is the Vice President of Sejong Institute and an expert in
geopolitics and geoeconomics of the Indo-Pacific, with a focus on South and
Southeast Asia. Her research examines regional dynamics, integrating economic
and technological dimensions with security implications. She adopts a comprehensive
perspective that connects economic and technological security within broader
strategic considerations.
She
has an extensive publication record, with recent works highlighting key
strategic issues in the Indo-Pacific. Notably, she edited & co-authored Order in Tension: Competing Perspectives and
Strategies in the Indo-Pacific (2024) and co-authored India, South Korea and the ASEAN: Middle Power Diplomacy in the
Indo-Pacific (2024). Other recent publications include Economic Security, Beyond Faction to National Interest (2024), New Indo-Pacific Vision and the Road Ahead
for South Korea-India Partnership (2023), and Comparison and Implications of Indo-Pacific Strategies: Focusing on the
United States, Europe, Japan, India, and ASEAN (2022). She actively engages
in academic and policy discussions, contributing to research on Indo-Pacific
strategic affairs.
She
is also involved in academic and professional associations, serving as Director
of Planning at the Korean Association of International Studies and Vice
President of the Korea Association of National Intelligence Studies.
Additionally, she is a member of the Korean Society of Area Studies, The 21st
Century Political Science Association, and other scholarly organizations.
Beyond academia, Dr. CHOI plays an
active role in policy development and strategic advisory work. She serves as a
member of the Policy Advisory Council for the National Security Office (NSO) in
the Office of the President and is a recognized Expert and Eminent Person (EEP)
in the ASEAN Regional Forum. She is also a member of the National Unification
Advisory Council, where she contributes to policy discussions on inter-Korean
affairs. Additionally, she collaborates with key government institutions,
including the Ministry of Unification and the Ministry of Trade, Industry &
Energy (MOTIE), serving on advisory and evaluation committees. From 2019 to 2024, she led the Sejong ASEAN
Young Leaders Program, overseeing initiatives to strengthen ASEAN youth
leadership and capacity-building.
She received
her M.A. and Ph.D. from the School of International Studies at Ewha Womans
University at Seoul. She was a visiting scholar at the Columbia University in
the City of New York.
